There are a few things that our pediatric dentist in Biloxi and Ocean Springs, Mississippi, may recommend following your child’s treatment. Please call McMurphy Pediatric Dental if you have any questions or if you need to schedule another appointment with Dr. Austin McMurphy.
Frenectomies
Composite Dental Fillings
- Help your child avoid sticky foods and biting into hard food
- Help your child maintain good oral hygiene
Dental Crowns
- Help your child avoid sticky foods, including hard candy, caramel and taffy.
- Crowned teeth will usually fall out when the permanent tooth is ready to come in.
Dental Sealants
- Do not allow your child to chew ice cubes, as this can cause the sealant to chip.
- Do not let your child eat hard, sticky or chewy candy. They can, however, chew sugarless gum.
- Ensure that your child brushes and flosses daily.
Local Anesthetic
- Numbness will last for two to four hours following treatment. During this time, make sure that your child does not bite, suck, or chew their lips, tongue, or cheek and injure themselves.
- Keep your child on a liquid diet until the anesthetic wears off.
- Your child may have a “panic” reaction to the tingling sensation when the anesthetic wears off. This is normal and will go away soon.
- If needed, provide Children’s Tylenol or Motrin to manage discomfort.
Tooth Extractions
- Make sure your child avoids carbonated beverages, hot foods or drinks, and snack chips for 24 hours.
- Do not let your child drink from a straw for 24 hours.
- Do not let your child rinse vigorously for 24 hours.
- Have your child bite on a sterile gauze using light pressure to reduce and control bleeding.
- Apply an ice pack to minimize pain and swelling.
- Give your child Tylenol or Motrin to manage discomfort (liquid or pills only, no chewable medication).
- If pain and swelling persist, call our office promptly.
